Q Is Leonardo Da Vinci's 'Bacchus' a Representation of Ophiuchus?

“Ophiuchus, from Greek Ophiukhos, literally ‘holding a serpent’, from Greek opis (or ophis), the Greek word for ‘serpent’, + Greek ekhein, ‘to hold, keep, have’. … there is a suggestion that there is a likely relationship between the Greek words ophis and *omphi-. [Omphi from the Indo-European root *nobh-. Related words ‘umbilicus’, ‘omphallus’, ‘navel’, ‘nave’, the hub of a wheel]. The constellation Ophiuchus is identified with Asclepius who was cut from his mother’s womb as a foetus. The long tube-like shape of a snake bears a resemblance to an umbilical cord. When the snake is curled up it might appear to be like the nave or hub of a wheel. [The womb is represented by Delphinus.] Ophiuchus was called Ciconia, the Stork, by the Arabian astronomers. They had depicted a stork in the place of Ophiuchus.”

In his book "Symbolism of the Religions of the world", Don Mario Roso de Luna identifies the "patriarch Jacob" with "Iao, Bacchus" or Bacchus.

As we have seen above, Bacchus is Jacob, Osiris and Moses. Referring to the Seventh Symphony, Beethoven said once, speaking of himself:

"I am Bacchus incarnate, to give humanity the wine [of Music] to drown [the pains of] its sorrow... [Each person] who divines the secret of my music is delivered from the misery that haunts the world." (LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN'S words in the final of the Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92, completed in 1812 with its allegrissimo "Festival of Bacchus", after having met Josephine and written the 3 Letters to the Immortal Beloved in July of the same year (1812).

"The Festival of Bacchus" of the Seventh Symphony is the Sublime Feast of the Dionisiac Drunkenness in the "Transcendental Eroticism" or White Sexual Magic between a Man and a Woman: Beethoven-Bacchus and his Eternally Beloved Josephine girdling her head with Grapevine leaves.

"The Secret of all Secrets lies in the Mysterious Shema Hamphoraseh Stone of the Hebrews. That is the Philosopher's Stone of the Alchemists. That is Sex. That is Sexual Magic, Love, Blessed be Love! The Bible tells us that when Jacob awoke from his sleep, he consecrated the "Stone", anointed it with oil and blessed it. Really, from that moment on, Jacob began to practice Sexual Magic; later, he incarnated his Inner Master, his Real being, Jacob is the Angel Israel." (From the Book "Tarot and Kabala by our VM. Samael Aun Weor).

"Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy, it is the wine of a new procreation, and I am Bacchus who presses out this glorious wine for men and makes them drunk with the spirit." [("Ludwig van Beethoven", quoted in "Marion M Scott, Beethoven (1934)"].

Q the Parable of the Oak Tree and the Etymology of the Word Hermes

A short poetic yet profane notion about what the Oak tree can teach us about living with grace through burden.

This Codex is an excerpt from "Book of Wonderful Suffering" by J. W. Phipps

Wikipedia of Hermes: Uncertain origin; usually linked to ἕρμα (hérma, “heap of stones”), itself of non-Indo-European substrate origin or from Proto-Indo-European *ser- (“to bind, put together”). Beekes instead suggests a Pre-Greek origin.

Source

The earliest form of the name Hermes is the Mycenaean Greek *hermāhās,[14] written 𐀁𐀔𐁀 e-ma-a2 (e-ma-ha) in the Linear B syllabic script.[15] Most scholars derive "Hermes" from Greek ἕρμα (herma),[16] "stone heap."[17]

The etymology of ἕρμα itself is unknown, but is probably not a Proto-Indo-European word.[14] R. S. P. Beekes rejects the connection with herma and suggests a Pre-Greek origin.[14] However, the stone etymology is also linked to Indo-European *ser- ("to bind, put together"). Scholarly speculation that "Hermes" derives from a more primitive form meaning "one cairn" is disputed.[18] Other scholars have suggested that Hermes may be a cognate of the Vedic Sarama.[19][20]

The Meaning of Hermes by Moe

Gods and Goddesses, Meaning of Words

In mythology, the Phoenician God Hermes was known by the Greeks and Romans as Mercury. He is credited with the invention of Hermes 4the fine arts,’ of the lyre, of medicine, of letters, of commerce, of magic, and of wrestling. The ancient Egyptians version of Hermes was known as Thoth, who was also the inventor of writing, magic and the arts. He is sometimes referred to as the trickster, and in the Iliad he was called “the bringer of good luck,” “guide and guardian”, and “excellent in all the tricks.” Hermes is also known as an inventor of fire, god of commerce and profit.

The confusion, or multitude of various character aspects to the God Hermes is primarily due to both the mythological creations by various authors such as Homer who attributed secrets, or their own perceptions to his character, and also the many authors who have also done the same. Fast forward 3,000 years to today and thousands of stories later, and we now have the end result being about 100 different meanings for this God.

Over the course of my research during the last several years, I have come to realize that if you want to find the true meaning of any subject, myth or God, you have to begin by studying the actual etymology of the words used to name that which you seek to understand. Another rule I have, is that you cannot be placed under a spell by those authors who spell and entrance their words and works into your head, without doing your own type of magical spelling to make sure you do not become spell bound.

Hence, don’t be tricked by the trickster…….

THE ETYMOLOGY OF THE NAME HERMES (HER-MES OR KER-MES)

In the etymology of the name Hermes, who is sometimes referred to as Hermon (Herm-On); we find the true secret ancient meaning to his name. Not a plethora of explanations by a thousand different authors, but a simple singular meaning based on common sense and using the science of words that today we call etymology; and if you are studying Greek or Phoenician myths and teachings, you need to use these same languages they speak to discover the true meaning like that of Hermes. You then take these meanings and make connections in their history, customs, and traditions to make sense of the ancient secrets that lie behind the darkness of the veil of Isis in order to see the light.

In the ancient Hebrew/Phoenician language, K and H are but one and the same letter. Therefor, Hermes can be spelled as Kermes, and it is from this sacred name of Kermes where we find the hidden true connection to the word worms, magic, purple, profit and the God of commerce. In Arabic, hermes is spelled kermes; in French, kermès; Old Irish, cruim; Italian, chermes; Lithuanian, kirmis; Albanian, krimp; and Spanish, carmes. In Sanskrit, krmi-ja is a compound word meaning “red dye produced by a worm.” It is said that a worm spelled krmih grows fat (Vmid) on raw flesh (kravye), or it may be derived from (the root) kram, meaning to creep, or from krdm (to crawl).

All throughout the region around the Mediterranean Sea, Levant and southern Europe, you will find a species of worms called kermes that live on a unique type of oak tree called the “kermes (hermes) oak (quercus coccifera),” and in England they are known as the British oak.

Kermes Oak

The dye is harvested from pregnant female kermes worms, which look like small red peas and that can be found attached to the trunk and branches of the “kermes oak tree.”

Kermes oak worm

This dye was often called in commerce ‘hermes.’

The etymology of quercus coccifera, the specific name ‘coccifera,’ is related to the production of red cochineal (crimson) dye and is derived from Latin, coccum; which was from Greek κὀκκος, the kermes worm. The Latin -fera means ‘bearer’. Hence, instead of Lucifer the light bearer, we have kermes (worm) the purple bearer.

The symbol of Hermes also has the word ker. In Greek, his symbol is called the kerykeion (ker-y-kei-on), and today it is known primarily by the Latin word ‘caduceus,’ with the two serpents/kermes/worms intertwined around a winged staff.

This is why oak trees, cities, statues, and symbols of Hermes can be found wherever the Phoenicians had sailed, traded and conquered with their billion, and quite possibly trillion dollar worm, purple, silk, medical and other goods that they had monopolized in order to become the Sons of the God of Commerce. In order to honor this fact, the Phoenicians had created the God Hermes represented in human form as a beautiful young man who made his way around the world with his winged hat, and winged shoes holding his ker-ykeion or caduceus. After all, he was the worm God Ker-Mes who helped make the Phoenicians one of the most powerful people, who built their empire with the help of a worm who happened to produce a beautiful purple dye.

THE MYTHOLOGICAL MEANING OF HERMES (KERMES)

The mythological meaning of Hermes (Kermes) is found in studying the Greek meaning of the compound word that is composed of the two words Her or Ker, and Mes (Her-Mes or Ker-Mes). The Greek meaning of the work Her or Ker is destruction, death and fate. In Greek mythology, the Keres(Κῆρες; singular: Ker Κήρ) were female death-spirits. According to a statement of Stesichorus noted by Eustathius, Stesichorus “called the Keres by the name Telchines”, whom Eustathius identified with the Curetes (Kuretes or Ker-re-tes) of Crete, who could call up squalls of wind and would brew potions from herbs (noted in Harrison, p 171). In the fifth century, Keres were imaged as small winged sprites in vase-paintings adduced by J.E. Harrison (Harrison, 1903), who described apotropaic rites and rites of purification that were intended to keep the Keres at bay.

The Greek word hermeneus (ἑρμηνεύς ) means interpreter, reflecting Hermes’s function as divine messenger with his winged hat and shoes which would be akin to the angelic being with wings in Christianity. It can be found the word cherub, or more appropriately, ker-ub whose meaning is an order of angelic beings, or should I say angelic worms or Hermes. Here is an image below of the God Hermes with the Goddess of War. He is depicted as an angel or more appropriately, a fallen angel …

Hermes

The second word in Her-mes is ‘mes.’ The meaning of the word mess is middle or intermediate, and fits perfectly with Hermes as the interpreter, or second messenger or God. The meaning of the word Her or Ker we have already identified is destruction, death and/or fate. This definition would go in line that when one is infected with the Kers or Hers, their fate, or mes is sealed by the middleman that resides in their bodies who we know has the winged spirit or God Hermes, or should we just say Worms?

As it is said in the Hebrew Bible in Exodus; “the worms that the manna (man) bred (flesh) were of this nature; “Man that is a worm (Hebrew: rimmah), and the son of man which is a maggot” (Hebrew: tole’ah),” or in Job 25: 6“How much less man, that maggot, And the son of man, that worm!” Hence, “They shall move out of their holes like worms of the earth,” signifies rather ‘creeping things,’ or ‘ serpents.’ – Micah (vii. 17)

I have written many articles about the Holy Island of Crete, worms, and also the ancient priesthood who were called by many names such as the Priests of Pan, Telchines and the Curetes (Kuretes or Ker-re-tes). It is this history and names such as the Ker-et-es, that we can find the same word of Ker, that is the same word that makes up the name of Hermes who we now know the legend of Hermes originated on Crete which was the product of this very same priesthood.

Hermes is sometimes referred to as Hermon (Herm-On), and you will find that he was born at Mount Hermon which is the same mountain on the same Holy Island of Crete where his father Zeus was also born. Manly P. Hall had said that Hermes was known to the Jews as “Enoch.” Today it is known as Mount Ida, but biblically as Mount Hermon where in the Book of Enoch, is the place where the Nephilim fell. On Mount Ida there is a cave where Zeus was said to be hidden, and the infant God placed in the care of the priesthood of the Ker-et-es as well. The French Occultist, Eliphas Levi had written; “The fallen angels gathered around their chief, Samiaxas, on a high mountain, which has been called ever since ‘the mountain of the Oath’, for the Eggregores pledged themselves there one to the other with a sacrilegious vow.”

Here is an image below that depicts this sacrilegious vow of Hermes and a merchant showing the God of Healing and Truth, Asclepius disapproving Hermes. Also shown as the three naked Graces Meditrine, Hygeia and Panacea.

Hermes and Asclepius

In the word Hermon, we get the compound meaning with the word ‘On,’ which is “a state of being, or power supply.” Therefor the worm named Kermes, when referred to as Kerm-On, is an angelic source of earthly and spiritual power for the Phoenicians which will become more than evident to you with in my next article “Hermes the Billion Dollar Worm God.”

It was on ‘the mountain of the Oath’ on Mount Ida where Pythagoras was initiated into the secret mysteries by the priests (Levites) of the Idaean Dactyli (Judeans and Tribe of Judah), by whom he was purified with the meteoritic thunder-stone in the cave of Zeus on Mount Ida in Crete; also known as the original Mount Zion, and mountain of the Oath of the Brotherhood who made the sacrilegious vow.

Mount Ida

These priests, and people were the fallen ones who turned away from their God in order to make many more Gods, Idols, symbols and sacrilegious vows to the materiality of commerce, war, and conquest. This would indicate the covenant and vows of the Nephilim made at Mount Zion. Those that fell…

Zero Milestone Washington District of Columbia

When this marker was dedicated on June 4, 1923, it was expected that it would be the milestone from which all road distances in the U.S. would be reckoned. Obviously people in places like Oregon and California didn't like the idea that their road markers would begin and end in the 3,000s, and the idea was scrapped. Now the Zero Milestone only anchors roads distances in Washington, DC.

It's an inscribed granite block, set inside a big brass compass on the sidewalk, about four feet high. It's popular with tourists who rest their cameras on it to take pictures of The White House, but who are otherwise oblivious to its purpose.

In Slavic mythology, Perun (Cyrillic: Перýн) is the highest god of the pantheon and the god of sky, thunder, lightning, storms, rain, law, war, fertility and oak trees.

Etymology

Main article: Perkwunos

Perun is strongly correlated with the near-identical Perkūnas/Pērkons from Baltic mythology, suggesting either a common derivative of the Proto-Indo European thunder god (whose original name has been reconstructed as *Perkwunos), or that one of these cultures borrowed the deity from the other. The root *perkwu originally probably meant oak, but in Proto-Slavic this evolved into *per- meaning "to strike, to slay".

The Lithuanian word "Perkūnas" has two meanings: "thunder" and the name of the god of thunder and lightning. From this root comes the name of the Finnish deity Ukko, which has a Balto-Slavic origin.

Artifacts, traditions and toponyms show the presence of the cult of Perun among all Slavic, Baltic and Finnic peoples. Perun was also related to an archaic form of astronomy – the Pole star was called Perun's eye and countless Polish and Hungarian astronomers continued this tradition – most known ones are Nicolaus Copernicus, and Franz Xaver von Zach.

Q Secret Societies and Hidden Knowledge: The Explosive Star that Inspired the Modern World

Secret Societies and Hidden Knowledge: The Explosive Star that Inspired the Modern World

UPDATED 1 MARCH, 2017 - 13:58 GRAHAM PHILLIPS

A few weeks ago, astronomers announced that in 2022 something truly spectacular is to occur: a new star will appear in the heavens. It will be the first such event visible with the naked eye for over 400 years. Created by the collision of two relatively dim stars, the resultant explosion is known as a “boom star.”

When this rare celestial occurrence takes place it will create a so-called red nova that will shine so brightly that it will be clearly seen at night in the constellation of Cygnus the swan. The last time a “new star” became visible without the aid of modern telescopes was in 1604, although this one was caused by a supernova, an exploding far-away sun that remained visible for many months. That one occurred in the constellation of Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer, and its remnants can still been seen as a beautiful ring nebula by astronomers today.

At a distance of 20,000 light years, the supernova was too far away to have any physical effect on Earth, but its appearance did have a significant psychological impact. It led to a remarkable series of sociological episodes that radically shaped history.

A Heavenly Sign Heralds a New Era of Enlightenment

The 1604 event is known as Kepler's Supernova, after the astronomer who made detailed observations of it at the time. However, it was not only professional star gazers who were enamored by the occurrence; it ignited an entirely new philosophical movement. In the same year, the German theologian Simon Studion published his Naometria (“Temple Measurement”), in which he interpreted the event in astrological terms, heralding the birth of a new era of enlightenment. Studion, it seems, believed that the new star was a heavenly sign, such as the star of Bethlehem is said to have proclaimed the birth of Christ. This new age was envisaged to include the advancement of scientific, religious, and social freedoms, and – a revolutionary concept for the time – the emergence of a new political order based around a powerful woman or queen.

Within a few years, a group known as the Rosicrucians (named after their emblem depicting a rose and cross) began to disseminate pamphlets along similar lines. Collectively called the Rosicrucian Manifestos, these works implied that Princess Elizabeth, the daughter of James I of England, was the woman who would somehow unite Europe into a kind of renaissance European Union. In 1613, Elizabeth had married Frederick V, the Elector (prince) of the Palatinate— a region of what is now south-western Germany.

The marriage is cryptically referenced in these Rosicrucian writings, in particular the 1616 publication referred to as The Alchemical Wedding . It seems that the society interpreted Elizabeth’s wedding, which was to cement an alliance between England and the protestant states of Germany, as being the start of the imagined European confederation. However, it all fell apart in 1619 when Fredrick was offered the throne of Bohemia in the modern Czech Republic. Elizabeth and Fredrick reigned as king and queen for just a few months before being deposed, and fled, ultimately to settle in the Netherlands. Because of her short reign, Elizabeth became known as the Winter Queen, but her descendant, Willem-Alexander, is king of the Netherlands today. Even though Elizabeth never became the envisaged Euro-queen, the ideals of religious and intellectual freedom of expression expounded by the Rosicrucian Manifestos continued to inspire others. It has even been suggested that those who organized the Mayflower voyage of 1620 had been Rosicrucians.

Cryptic messages, mysterious ciphers, and enigmatic symbolism

Very little is known about the original Rosicrucians as their pamphlets were published anonymously during the second decade of the seventeenth century. These works were clearly inspired by Studion’s Naometria, in that they disseminated the idea of a coming age of enlightenment heralded by the new star, but whether or not the Rosicrucians were a Europe-wide secret society of the learned individuals, as their works claimed, is open to debate. However, the authors of these texts wittingly or unwittingly initiated a variety of movements that had considerable ramifications on world history.

The Rosicrucian Manifestos included cryptic messages, mysterious ciphers, and enigmatic symbolism, and throughout the subsequent 1600s various secret societies established themselves on the Rosicrucian model, and exactly three hundred years ago, in 1717, some of them merged to become the Freemasons. One of the most famous Masonic symbols is the Eye of Providence, an image depicted on the dollar bill, leading many historians to propose that the Founding Fathers were influenced by Freemasonry.

An early Masonic version of the Eye of Providence with clouds and a semi-circular glory. ( Public Domain )

The Eye of Providence, the glyph depicting an eye in the sky, shining down rays upon the world, was actually a later version of an earlier symbol used by the Rosicrucians, which represented the new star of 1604 radiating its influence upon the Earth. The new star had come to symbolize the concept of intellectual enquiry and the very ideals of The Enlightenment, a seventeenth-century academic movement advocating reason rather than the confinements of established tradition.

The new star later came to be depicted as an eye, here shown with a snake representing the constellation of Ophiuchus in which it appeared. ( Public Domain )

Remember, Remember: Conspirators to Murder and Coup

Another, far less successful, and sadly violent group that were influenced by the new star of 1604 were a band of dissident English Catholics led by the wealthy landowner Robert Catesby. In 1605, Catesby believed that Princess Elizabeth, then just a child, was destined to rule England, and staged an abortive conspiracy to enthrone her. His ambitious plan to kill the king, his other heirs, and all his ministers, by blowing up the Houses of Parliament was discovered and Catesby was shot dead. The day is still remembered in Britain every year during firework displays on November fifth. It is called Guy Fawkes Night, named after the co-conspirator who was discovered waiting to ignite the barrels of gunpowder hidden below the parliament building.

For the most part, however, those inspired by the new star of 1604 made positive contributions to history. The English physician Robert Flood wrote extensively about the Rosicrucian works of the early 1600s; some scholars have suggested that he was actually one of their authors. He was certainly inspired by the Rosicrucian ideas and believed that a new age for the advancement of knowledge was at hand.

Another influential thinker swayed by the new star was the Welsh philosopher Thomas Vaughan, who translated Rosicrucian writings from Latin into English. Flood and Vaughan were immensely significant in transforming the old supernatural notions of alchemy into the discipline of modern chemistry.

The Mirror of Wisdom and the Invisible College

One of the mysterious Rosicrucian Manifestos was the 1618 Speculum Sophicum Rhodostauroticum, "The Mirror of the Wisdom of the Rosy Cross.” Thought to have been written by the German alchemist Daniel Mögling, it revealed the existence of the so-called Invisible College, a secret Rosicrucian society of scholars whose purpose was to transform the mystical notions such as alchemy and astronomy into the disciplines of experimental chemistry and observational astronomy.

A cryptic illustration in the text depicts the college as a building on wheels, symbolizing that the institution had no fixed abode – it was a meeting of minds, rather than an actual university – and above it, to the left, shines the new star of 1604 and the representation of Ophiuchus (the constellation of the serpent-bearer in which it appeared), the celestial sign that inspired the organization’s founding.

Illustration from the ‘Speculum Sophicum Rhodostauroticum’ depicting the Invisible College. In the top left corner shines the new star of 1604 and the representation of the constellation Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer. ( Public Domain )

Although various esteemed members of the Invisible College have been suggested, such as the philosopher and statesman Francis Bacon, the inventor of modern algebra Thomas Harriot, and the innovative architect Inigo Jones, some historians doubt that the organization ever existed. Nevertheless, the idea of the Invisible College directly influenced various seventeenth-century experimental scientists, such as Robert Boyle, to found the Royal Society in 1660. This prestigious academy for the advancement of science still exists today, and its members have included many of the names associated with the scientific discoveries that have changed the world, such as Isaac Newton, Benjamin Franklin, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking.

The Secret Knowledge of the Illuminati

Then there’s the Illuminati (from the Latin meaning “The Enlightened”), a secret society around which much imaginative speculation and conspiracy theories have evolved. All we know for certain is that the organization was originally called the Bavarian Illuminati, founded in 1776 by the German philosopher Johann Adam Weishaupt to oppose religious influence over public life and corruption in government. He openly admitted to having been inspired by the Rosicrucian Manifestos. Somewhat ironically, considering its name has become almost synonymous with “secret knowledge,” another of the Illuminati’s aims was to promote the freedom of information. The group went underground by the early 1800s, after claiming to have initiated the French and American revolutions, and some authors have speculated that it still exists, its members secretly embedded at high levels of international society.

Whether or not science, the arts, and even The Enlightenment itself, would have evolved without the movements inspired by the supernova of 1604 is anyone’s guess. It is fair to say, however, that it would almost certainly have happened differently, and probably been instigated by different people. The big question is, was there a real Rosicrucian movement or an Invisible College rather than just an inspiring notion? The answer lies in finding – if it exists – a place where the first Rosicrucians met. Although the movement apparently involved luminaries throughout Europe, it seems to have been concentrated on the British Isles, and in England there has recently been discovered a good contender for just such a place.

The Original Location Found?

At the impressive manor house of Canons Ashby near the town of Daventry, close to the center of England, a secret room was found in 2013 that for centuries had been hidden behind paneling. Dating from the first decade of the 1600s, it is decorated with mysterious symbolism at first thought to be Masonic. However, the room and its decorations date from over a hundred years before the Freemasons were founded. The secret attic chamber seems to have been the meeting place of influential members of a society who would appear to have been Rosicrucians.

The secret room at Cannons Ashby. Dating from around 1604, it is decorated with Rosicrucian symbolism and the emblems of those who met here. (Photography by David Shire)

The room is decorated with Rosicrucian symbolism, such as a representation of the new star, a depiction of the pillars from the biblical Temple of Solomon, and the dividers that later became associated with the Masonic movement. Remarkably, the walls are painted with the coat-of-arms of those who apparently met here, including many of those whose names have been associated with the original Rosicrucian movement, such as Robert Flood, Thomas Vaughan, and Francis Bacon; even the Gunpowder Plotter, Robert Catesby. Perhaps the most revealing is William Shakespeare, who has often been speculated to have been a Rosicrucian himself.

The Building of our Modern World

The psychological influence of the new star of 1604 seems to have been considerable. Those inspired by the Rosicrucian Manifestos laid the foundations of experimental science, biology, chemistry, and the modern understanding of the universe which led ultimately to the development of today’s technology. It’s even possible that the French Revolution, the modern Dutch monarchy, and even the creation of the United States may have been very different, or may not have happened at all, had Kepler's Supernova not occurred.

What’s certain is that many secret and mystical societies still exist today, claiming descent from the movements that were originally inspired by the event, some even calling themselves Rosicrucians. The new star predicted for 2022 is 1,800 light years away, far enough for us not to worry about it irradiating the Earth, but it will be interesting to see what kind of psychological reactions and social phenomena it inspires – for better or worse.

And, on a closing note, next time you take a look at a dollar bill and see the Eye of Providence, remember that although it is now said to represent the all-seeing eye of God, it was originally a depiction of the supernova of 1604.

The Eye of Providence can be seen on the reverse of the Great Seal of the United States, seen here on the US $1 bill. ( Public Domain )

Q the Bird's Nest Symbolism in the Middle East and Mesopotamian Reed Boats

Why Did the Mesopotamians Build Reed Basket Boats?

Ancient boats made of reed basketry and covered in pitch were built about 7500 years ago in ancient Mesopotamia, the earliest boat building known.

Mesopotamian Reed Boats Changed the Stone Age

The word "kuphar" is derived from the Arabic word quffa (قفة), meaning a basket woven from reeds and leaves. The boat visually resembles a basket and is used for a similar purpose: transporting fruits, vegetables, and other goods. The Arabic word in turn originated from the Akkadian word quppu, meaning basket.

The tomb of Tutankhamen was discovered in 1922. In it was this Jewel of Ra-Horakhty. I could see this as being the possible source of much historical speculation in the 40's, 50's and onward about what exactly was represented in this artwork. Perhaps this is the origin of much of the world's belief in UFO's? Whether it was a joke or a true psychological operation aimed to steer people's thinking about Columbus is something to ponder.

(In the Eastern tradition, the goose is the symbol of a beautiful woman. The feet also put me in mind of the vulture headdress of Egypt.

While the true meaning of the ancient Persian symbol is "not known", it doesn't take much observation to notice that the ring at the center of the Farahavar likely respresents a coracle and that the two feet of the bird are the paddles of the coracle. Perhaps this coracle is something similar to a life preserver hanging onto the edge of the boat. If you change your perspective, the center ring also appears to be a halo over the head of a woman balancing a basket on top of her head, perhaps some figure of a water or sea goddess. This would make a lot of sense and is interesting to think that the coracle could be one of (if not THE) origins of the symbol found throughout the world of the halo. This raises some interesting questions also about the origins of the Thunderbird in the American native cultures, because the bird feet in this artwork also resemble lightning bolts coming down from a cloud.

-------- The Faravahar is a symbol that’s comprised of a sun disk with wings spread out on either side, and a seated male figure at the center, most commonly seen in ancient Persian art and architecture. It’s a highly detailed and intricate representation of the winged sun disk, one of the most ancient symbols found in art, architecture and seals from ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Sumer, Judah and Assyria.

Although the Faravahar is a Persian symbol, it’s neither Zoroastrian nor Persian in origin. In fact, it’s believed to have originated in Mesopotamia as a depiction of Ashur, a winged deity, that may have symbolized divine kingship.

The Farvahar first appeared in Persia during the Achaemenid Persian Empire. After the Achaemenian dynasty, the use of the Faravahar in Persian architecture and art declined, regaining popularity once again in the modern era.

Now there's your true mothership that gives you abundance! Beam me up, Scotty!

Here is what some of the symbol means currently.

Just an observation, but I hear a lot of people say "just keep positive"! But if you are only using positive force, as pictured here, and not negative force (or vice versa) you just spin in circles and don't achieve the "the progressive force" to move forward.

The Bird’s Nest Stadium and Chinese Philosophy

The Bird’s Nest is not only a striking piece of architecture but also a masterpiece of Chinese design philosophy.

Chinese people believe that everything in the world has yin and yang, a simple and broad ancient Chinese philosophy. Yin refers to feminine and negative traits, while yang means masculine and positive. The theory of yin and yang has a lot of conferred meanings and principles but can be simplify classified into three relationships: opposition, unity, and conversion.

So how does the Bird’s Nest Stadium embody the Yin and Yang Theory of Chinese philosophy?

Yin and Yang Theory emphasizes balance and harmony, like that between Earth and Heaven, water and fire, night and day, etc. In Chinese culture, "bird" has the metaphorical meaning of masculinity. If "bird" means masculine and vigorous, then "nest" symbolizes femininity, nurture, and the carrier that contains all things. So, its name has yin-yang harmony.

Furthermore, the Bird’s Nest Stadium and the nearby National Aquatics Center (Water Cube), are adjacent, coordinated, and echo each other. One is a gray steel structure and one is a colorful water bubble, one is soft, and one is rigid. The square-shaped Water Cube represents the yin of water and the earth, and the corresponding sun, fire, and heaven of yang are represented by the oval-shaped Bird's Nest next to it.

Athletes competing in the two post-modern architectures, again embody a harmonious yin-yang coexistence — between heaven, earth, and man.

The Babylonian Universe

PLATE VIII. THE BABYLONIAN UNIVERSE (From The Universe as pictured in Milton's Paradise Lost; William Fairfield Warren, 1915)

WHAT PEOPLE AT WHAT TIME first imagined the Earth as a hollow hemispherical shell floating on the world-waters we cannot know. But it is another of the "oldest figures of Earth." This idea of the Earth as "boat-shaped" had its origin probably in the almost universal myth of the Deluge; the transition from an Ark floating right side up, to the Earth, itself a boat, floating upside down, is an easy one. But "boat-shaped" is a word which, thanks to our modern patterns, has lost its early significance. The ancient world had, however, among a certain people, a boat built on exactly such an hemi- spherical model. To-day, on the Euphrates River, these same kufas float--the round boats of the ancient Chaldeans, made of skins, stretched and sewed into a hollow hemisphere. And to-day, likewise, on the same river, fishermen ride at ease on the same inflated cushions or air-boats of skin that were in use thousands of years ago. Nothing skimmed the waters more swiftly than these circular boats, and nothing floated more safely than these hollow hemispheres of stretched skin upturned on the waters.

PLATE VII. A. A kufa laden with stoner and manned by a crew of four men. Drawn by Faucher-Gudin from a bas-relief at Koyunjik. (From The Dawn of Civilization; Gaston Maspero, 1894)

There is a curious relation between the ancient boats and the Assyrian story of the Creation. If these boats were hemispheres of stretched skin, so were the Heavens and the Earth. Merodach, the world-maker of this legend, lay for a long time helpless like the other gods under the blind rule of Chaos-Tiemat, from whom sprang everything and who created unceasingly, but who had yet created neither Heaven nor Earth. From her issued spontaneously monstrous animals and figures, men with two wings and others with four, with two faces or four, with goats' legs and horns, or with the hindparts of a horse and the foreparts of a man; animals with human heads or fishes' tails; other forms in which every sort of animal shape was united in confusion, and this confusion of creation run mad never ceased.

But finally Merodach arose, alone of all the gods, to meet her, and then it was that Space witnessed its most terrific combat. He finally slew her, but matters were hardly bettered, for Tiemat's great dead body stretched throughout all Space. "He placed his foot upon her," reads the Assyrian story, "and with his unerring knife he cut into the upper part of her; then he cut the blood vessels, and caused the blood to be carried by the north wind to the hidden places. . . . He contemplated the great corpse, raised it and wrought marvels. He split it in two as one does a fish for drying; then he hung up one of the halves on high, which became the heavens." The other half he spread out under his feet to form the Earth, and immediately all the creatures that were in her disappeared. Merodach again surveyed the empty world; then he cut off his own head, and, having kneaded the blood flowing from it with the Earth, formed men, who were thus endowed with a surviving particle of understanding and with a surviving particle of divine thought.

This odd conception of the heavens as made of "skin" is found over and over among primitive races. The Yakuts say that the sky is made of several skins, tightly stretched and overlapping. The Buriats call the Milky Way a "stitched seam" in the sky, and they speak with awe of a "certain being" who murmurs from time to time, "Long, long ago, when I was young, I sewed the sky together."

The picture of the kufa (Plate VII, A) is given to make clearer what most of the writers on the old Akkadian cosmogony mean when they say, "The Akkadians or Chaldeans considered the Earth to be hollow and boat-shaped." For "boat-shaped" meant to them no elongated oval figure, but distinctly a hollow hemisphere, a round shell, even a "stretched skin." Plate VII, B shows Myer's construction of their world on just this model, and his interpretation is followed below. 1

Briefly, E is the convex side of the hollow Earth shell. From C to E stretches the Lower Firmament, or zone of the atmosphere--winds, storms and clouds; this zone rests firmly upon the convex Earth shell. From C to A is the Upper Firmament, divided into two layers; from A to B is the zone of the spirit of the heavens; and from B to C is the zone of the planets--"sheep," or "wanderers," or "watchers." This is the zone also of lightning and of thunder. A, in this diagram, represents the Zodiac, which is "in Space and the Great Celestial Ocean," called also the "Deep" and the "Abyss." T’hom, the Great Dragon of this Great Sea, was also called Tiemat, and it was really looked upon as the Primordial Abyss out of which everything in the Universe, including Heaven and Earth, came. The arrangement of the seven planets, between B and C, are, according to Myer, a. Saturn, b. Jupiter, c. Mars, d. Sun, e. Venus, f. Mercury, g. Moon, and Earth the centre.

F F is the concave side of the Earth shell, with seven zones described, "answering," says Myer, "as shadows, to the orbits of the seven planets." This was the realm of the king of the ghost-world, the king of the dead. Curiously enough, it was believed to have been ruled over at one time by Ea, deity of Wisdom. G was the Nadir, and I was the mountain of the East, or the mountain of the world, which supported the Upper Firmament and the Great Celestial Ocean. II is the Great Chaotic Crystalline Sea, extending to an unknown distance beyond the Zodiacal zone. III is the pivot of the Star zone, on the top of the World mountain, upon which the firmament revolves. IV are the guarded gates to the Underworld, abode of the dead, or home of the dark spirits, or a place for punishment. Yet in it are concealed the waters of life, and through this region of the Underworld the nightly journey of the Sun takes place, from west to east.

Disregarding any number of merely technical differences between them, this diagram of Myer's will serve as a fair picture of any cosmogony based on the idea that the Earth is a hollow hemisphere with an underworld. But there is sharp disagreement over whether after all the ancient Assyrian people--certainly the Chaldeans and Babylonians--believed that the Earth was a hemispherical shell, or whether they believed that it was something quite other than that.

Babylon was mighty, and it perished utterly. Of all its wisdom, only battered fragments of texts remain; which present-day scholars have worked for years to interpret. Within a period of just twenty years, from 1888 to 1908, eight different diagrams of the supposed figure of this Babylonian Universe were offered by eight different men, of which Myer's diagram was the first. The last of these is Dr. William Fairfield Warren's, first published in The Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, 1908. As he points out, no two of the other seven agree; certainly no one of the other seven bears any likeness to this beautiful construction of eight crystalline spheres surrounding a cubical, pyramidal, antipodal Earth-figure (Plate VIII). "For the reconstruction of the Babylonian universe," he says, "we have no less than twelve most valuable data derived from the study of ancient Babylonian texts." Following is an abstract of the twelve data on which he modelled this translucent universe. 1

1. In the Babylonian conception of the universe the earth occupied the central place. It was the accepted centre of their planetary system.
2. The northern half of the earth was called the upper, associated with life and light. The southern half was called the under, associated with darkness and death. The South and the Underworld are identical.
3. The upper or northern half of the earth was regarded as consisting of seven stages (tupukati), ranged one above the other in the form of a staged pyramid. The staged Temple of Nippur, according to Sayce, was a model of the Earth according to the belief of those who built it.
4. Correspondingly, the antarctic or under half of the Earth was supposed to consist of seven similar stages. The seven tupukati of the underworld are a facsimile of the seven tupukati of the over world.
5. Like the quadrilateral temple modelled after it, the Earth of the Babylonians was four-cornered. In this particular it agreed with the conception ascribed to the ancient Egyptians, Hebrews, Chinese, and to the Indo-Aryans of the Rig-Veda period.
6. In Babylonian thought there were seven heavens and seven hells. This belief is one of untraceable antiquity.
7. Above the seventh heaven was another, the "highest heaven," that of the fixed stars, called by the Babylonians the "heaven of Anu," after the name of one of their oldest and highest gods.
8. This eighth heaven was divided by the Zodiac into two corresponding portions, an upper, or Arctic, and an under, or Antarctic. At the upper pole Anu had his palace and throne.
9. In Babylonian thought, the north pole of the heavens was the true zenith of the cosmic system, and the axis of the system upright; consequently the diurnal movements of the sun and moon were regarded as occurring in a horizontal plane.
10. Proceeding outward from the central Earth, the order of the seven known planets was as follows: Moon, Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn. That their respective distances from the Earth were not uniform was already known.
11. In order to pass from the upper half of the Earth to its under half, that is, from the abode of living men to the abode of the dead, it was necessary to cross a body of water which on every side separated the two abodes.
12. According to Diodorus Siculus, the Babylonians considered that the twelve designated stars south of the Zodiac stood in the same relation to the dead as do the twelve corresponding stars north of the Zodiac to men in the land of the living. This representation clearly makes the living and the dead the residents respectively of antipodal surfaces of one and the same heaven-enclosed Earth. According to the Babylonian Creation Tablets (V, line Anu and Ea are antipodally located gods, Anu being enthroned at the north pole of the heavens, and Ea at the south pole.

These twelve propositions, says Dr. Warren, are the fundamental features of the ancient Babylonian world-concept, and each of the twelve requirements is met by this figure. The upright central line represents the polar axis of the heavens and Earth in perpendicular position. The two central seven-staged pyramids represent the upper and lower halves of E-KUR, the Earth; the upper is the abode of living men, the lower the abode of the dead. The separating waters are the four seas. The seven dotted half circles above the Earth represent the "seven heavens," and the corresponding seven hemispheres below the earth, the "seven hells." The seven inner concentric spheres are respectively the domains and abodes of Sin, Shamash, Nabu, Ishtar, Nergal, Marduk, and Ninib, each being a "world-ruler" in his own planetary sphere. (The order of these spheres has been given above as Moon, Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.) The outer-most sphere (with its upper half cut away, as are the upper seven heavens, to show better the interior of the system) is the sphere of the antipodal gods, Anu and Ea, and the heaven of the fixed stars. It is to be noted further, Dr. Warren explains, that the spaces between the spheres widen rapidly at each remove from the Earth, so rapidly that in a world-view the size of this, they cannot be represented other than as in this plate.

Dr. 'Warren calls this "The Babylonian Universe" principally because Babylonia is almost the limit of our back-ward reach to the wisdom of the past, and our retracing of the persistent recurrences of so many of these principles--the "four-cornered Earth," or the cubical Earth, the "seven heavens," "Earth and counter-Earth," the "crystalline spheres," the "mountains of the world," and so on--must end there. But its origin, he says, was among a people antedating the Babylonians. "A truer name therefore for the system would be the Pre-Babylonian. The East-Semites received it from their predecessors in the possession of the Euphratean valley, the Akkado-Sumarians. At least such is the opinion and the teaching of our highest experts. Did the system originate among those non-Semitic predecessors in the valley? This has been assumed, but no man can pretend to know."
