Revelation 15:2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.

The Lincoln Memorial contains 46 columns in total.

There are also 46 lines in this inscription of the Gettysburg Address.

While I could not find any direct connection to 42, I found this interesting and probably intentional. It could be a reference to the year 46 BC, which is known as "the longest year in history" due to Julius Caesar's calculations adjusting the Roman calendar to the solar cycle. It is also the same year that Cleopatra visited Rome. Roman references are plainly built into the monument and it is openly referred to on the Lincoln Memorial Visitor's Guide.

This just further demonstrates to me that the architects of the monuments in DC could have had an underlying purpose in the numbers they were selecting for the columns and the lines in the inscriptions.
